Who We Are
Alex Washburne, PhD
FOUNDER & CHIEF SCIENTIST
Alex loves a challenge.
He received degrees in mathematics and biology from the University of New Mexico and a PhD from Princeton on competition and evolution in systems ranging from fecal microbiomes to financial markets. His consulting journey began in his post-doc, when his advisor (Diana Nemergut) passed away. As a post-doctoral free agent, Alex assembled his own scientific community through consulting, ultimately founding Selva Analytics.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Alex worked with managers across cultures, contexts, and countries to provide locally-adapted forecasts and brainstorm solutions. From alternatives to PCR-testing for low-income countries to high-tech dashboards analyzing thousands of epidemics, he tailors solutions to the client to incorporate medical, economic, and other competing risks.
When he's not forecasting COVID epidemics or analyzing global financial markets, Alex can be found fly fishing at his secret spots on the Gallatin River or rock climbing around the world.
